Nature and Environment
Globally, the tiger is facing extinction. In the Russian Far East, however, appropriate safeguarding measures over the last few decades have successfully halted the decline in numbers of the Siberian tiger. Today, this area is home to 600 of the wild cats – and that is verging on too many, as there are regular reports of the animals entering human settlements, preying on pet animals and attacking humans. Whether the wilderness and the modern world can co-exist is a challenge that goes beyond national discussions about lynxes, bears and wolves.
