For a long time, the conquest of the Alps had mainly the scope, to surmount the hostile mountains without taking too many risks. However, at the end of the 19th century, new phenomena developed. All of a sudden, the humans had the intention, to enter this world of eternal ice and to come as close as possible to the legendary summits of the Matterhorn and the Eiger. In a competition for the greatest attractions and consequently for the favour and the money of tourists, technical marvels are constructed in the hostile regions of the high mountains. This film shows the impressive range from the construction of the first rack railways which cost the lives of many, to the current alpine reality, where thousands of cable cars and lifts transfer millions of people up to the world of the highest peaks in the Alps every year.
