The nearly 300 stairs of the Sparchenstiege are the only connection between the Kaiser Valley and the world outside. It is the only inhabited valley in Austria not accessible by streets. This valley is located near Kufstein, between the Wilder and the Zahmer Kaiser. Approximately 30 persons live there throughout the year, in the wide-spread Tyrolean farming houses. An idyllic scenery which can hardly be topped. However, what seems to be a paradise for tourists means arduousness throughout the centuries for the inhabitants. Food and construction materials have to be transported on an endless rope haulage system to the valley. After decades of negotiations and protests, finally a tunnel is going to be constructed, which is to connect the Kaiser Valley with the outside world. What will happen, when the isolated place will suddenly be accessible by road? Will it loose its unique atmosphere?
