“Der stille Fall” is the portrait of Mike Schönherr, a 34-year-old basejumper from Ziller Valley (Austria). We follow the extreme athlete on his adventures in the air and get an insight into the way in which he experiences the world. The film deals with a relatively new kind of sport, “speedflying”, and Mike Schönherr’s preparations for his “first exit” at the “Gerlossteinwand” in the Ziller Valley, which shows how difficult it is to balance questionable and calculable risk.
On 25 June 2008 Mike Schönherr wanted to put into scene a very special BASE jump for film shots. As he was trying to deploy his parachute just above the ground, it did not open. Mike Schönherr crashed onto the roof of a garage with full speed and died on the spot.
