Pakistan, July 8, 2006. The last photography. Euphoricly, the Tyrolean Markus Kronthaler rises his arms to the sky. He stands on the summit of the 8047 meter high Broad Peak. A few moments later he collapses and dies – for exhaustion and lack of fluids, only a few metres away from the summit. His companion has to leave the corpse up there.
Pakistan, July 21st, 2007. „For over a year I have been longing for this moment. Finally I could let him go. It was hard, but somehow it was also a beautiful moment“, Georg Kronthaler describes his feelings when he found the corpse of his killed brother Markus. Together with two friends, the mountain rescuers Paul Koller and Stefan Lackner, and with six Pakistan high altitude porters, the Tyrolean came to pick up his dead brother from the summit of this 8.000 m peak. A risky enterprise and a competition with time…
