In the remote kingdom of Zanskar, in the Northern Himalayas, “Becoming a Woman” recounts the true and moving story of a friendship shattered by destiny. Two best friends have to part and to leave their families forever. Tenzin will be married to a man she hasn't chosen, while Palkit will become a nun. Two adolescents in the Himalayas: one kidnapped by her future husband, the other head shaved as she enters the convent forever. Two ordeals for the same goal… to become women!

Kamera Alpin in Gold 2007

The price for the best film in the category “Alpine und Foreign Cultures” goes to “Becoming a Woman in Zanskar”. Jean.Michel Corillion’s gripping images and sensitive direction gives an intimate insight into the life and destiny of two girls in the remote kingdom of Zanskar in the Northern Himalayas. The only two alternatives for them are getting married or becoming a nun. Rarely has there been a more involving and personal portrayal of the every day life in a culture that is almost totally unknown to us.
