Far in the east of Kazakhstan, in the remote Altai mountains, a unique lake, the Markakol is located. The water of the approximately 100 rivers and brooks flow into the lake. The lake then flows even as far as into the north Polar Sea. Therefore, the Markakol Lake, situated in an altitude of 1500 metre, has developed as the mountain lake with the richest quantity of fish in Asia. Millions of salmon come to this place to spawn there. However, also the landscapes around the lake are as spectacular as the lake itself. In the magnificent Taiga woods the maral deer, a type of Siberian giant deer, ibex, black storks and numerous birds of prey live. Only two tiny villages exist on the lake, whose inhabitants live from agriculture and from fishing.
